ATLS®
Advanced Trauma Life Support ®
The course is taught at a number of centres around the UK, including some in our region. As of 2018, the edition being taught is the 10th, with an on-line preparation package followed by a 2-day course delivered face-2-face.
Our courses run mainly at the centre in South Wales (16 courses annually). We also have a link with courses in London (6 courses annually) and Oxford (3 courses annually). As of 2021, EMCEF is developing a "portable" course, to be taken to various locations where there is a need as well as the possibility to run the course. Our first one of these was held at Kettering in June, 2021. The plan for 2022 is for EMCEF to run the course in more places.
There are also plans to begin running ATLS Instructor courses, but dates and venues have not yet been determined for these. |
Demand for places on courses exceeds availability by a substantial margin. We aim to set up additional courses in an attempt to cover the shortfall, prioritising emergency medicine clinicians.
Our ATLS courses provide candidates with a reliable systematic approach to the assessment and management of trauma victims within the systems and constructs of the National Health Service. Teaching is realistic and based on sound educational methodology, building a solid understanding of the various concepts and principles involved. Our ways of teaching have been developed and tested over more than two decades, originating from the leadership of Mr. Harry Stevens MBE - the first person to be honoured for services to resuscitation training.
