The STAMPEM course consists of a number of workshops on systems for everyday analysis of patient data – blood gases, ECGs & X-rays – focusing on principles, safety tips, tricks & shortcuts. It teaches and reinforces practical methods that anyone can use on every shift, each explained down to basics. It focuses beyond what is usually covered by standard teaching, bridging the knowledge gaps and promoting deeper understanding, rather than a reliance on fallible memory.
Teaching is by currently active EM consultants, each with at least 10 years’ shop-floor experience.
All teaching is F2F. We do not believe that a sufficient level of interaction is possible on line or via media. Evidence from our feedback strongly supports this.
The STAMPEM course was created as a combination of components from two previous courses, providing a deep focus on the techniques taught, but without spending so long on any particular aspect so as to lead to a loss of interest. The first run of this new course model ran in December, 2017 and was a great success. Participant numbers are limited in order to ensure ample time for questions to be answered and for sufficient examples and practice, without rushing.
Feedback has been received from the majority of participants. It is summarised here:
Lecture/session quality was rated as above expectation on all sessions, with the ones on blood gas analysis and CXR being the favourites.
Candidates judged the academic level for the various sessions as pitched to their level. This is reassuring, as candidates ranged from F2 to ACP to senior registrar level. This is one of the hallmarks of the wworkshops - they are structured so as to be clear and useful to everyone.
Over all, candidates thought they learned substantially from every session and that their practice was likely to change because of this!
Feedback was remarkably positive in particular for the session on blood gas analysis, with a number of people expressing the view that it, even just by itself, was worth coming for!
Comments and endorsements are included in the brochure for the course, but more are listed here:
The CPD was very educational as a whole...
I highly recommend blood gas, x-ray interpretation to any one working in ED...
The systematic interpretation quite helpful in interpretation both VBG and ABG...
Made me realise what things I could have been missing all this time and how over-simplified I had been making things. Blew my mind a bit, as was completely different to what I had been taught...
A truly amazing lecture; an enlightened way of analysing blood gas results. Keep the same, I wouldn't change anything about it...
Generally speaking, the course had a nice, pleasant vibe to it that allowed people to engage and ask questions when they wanted to. I would highly recommend it to all ACCS trainees...
VBG: Invaluable. Wish I knew this method before my EM rotation. CXR: good tips provided and wish I had had these prior to my EM rotation...
Why did no-one ever teach me this before? I could have been so much more right all these years!
ABCs for ABGs – what a great system…
This is the best ever method…
Very useful session. I used it the very next day and it worked perfectly…
Thanks for this – at last something I can work with!
I will recommend this to my colleagues (and my seniors)…
A great combination of topics – are there any others? The systems are really great!
This stuff should be taught at medical school the way your course teaches it…
The blood gas lecture is the best lecture I have ever been to…
A “must read” – thanks for doing this. Perfect for all levels…
Completely changed the way I look at ABGs…
The X-ray sessions were the most useful. It’s important to have a system, so that you don’t miss anything in the heat of the moment!
Thank you for all the practical real-life tips and tricks. I will use these every day!
Best day of education in years. I am sold on all the systems!
Really good radiology methods, especially the CXR Primary Survey…
Simply amazing!
Great sessions on X-rays, especially the chest primary survey…
Very useful! Nice to have something that all team-members can use…
Have been working for years on trauma patients. Never seen it done this well and thoroughly explained and clarified…
Really great lectures and workshops. Useful for every day practice…
Thank you for delivering such a refreshing day of lectures yesterday. The energy that you gave to the subjects was wonderful...
Overall good value for money and excellent, enthusiastic teaching of what can sometimes be delivered in a less enthusiastic manner...
Great fun. Expert delivery…
As a whole, the day was amazing and the blood gas interpretation opened my eyes to a lot of things that I can miss...
ECG analysis: Really liked the way you explained how certain leads can be used for specific uses; definitely excellent explanation of how to spot RBBB and LBBB on ECG; very down to earth and practical explanations...
GCS: Lots of audience participation; very useful to learn more practical ways for the setting; genuinely, I can't think of anything that would make this session better...
Can these methods be incorporated into the FRCEM syllabus? Why do we have to go to a course to get this?
Never learned more in one day...
What a stunning eye-opener!
Great to listen and learn rather than taking notes – useful handouts... Spaced out well with good breaks...
Good even for ACP level!
Over all, a fantastic day and I liked the teaching style. Will definitely recommend...
All the handouts were really helpful and easy to follow... The number of cases to practice the processes was a great way to learn... Teaching was excellent, engaging and enthusiastic...
I have read about blood gas analysis on various media and it has never been that expository and easy to learn too... ECG tips were very helpful, especially identifying blocks/hemi-blocks - absolutely on point, as I have checked several examples which all fit...
As a trainee ACP, this course gave me an insight into depth of physiology that as nurses we are not taught, and how to apply when interpreting results...
A great presenter... The ability to keep the audience engaged for a whole day...
Excellent presentation skills with very good awareness of the audience's level of understanding of the topic presented as we went along...
The standout lecture was the blood gas analysis. You went over topics which no-one else has been able to describe clearly either in medical school or post-graduate education...
One of the best courses I have attended during my training...
The blood gas analysis workshop has revolutionised my analysis of blood gases nowadays...
Blood gas interpretation: this was a game changer and I will be using this method for the foreseeable future - I wish I had known this years ago...
The 7-seconds scan for potentially lethal ECG patterns - everyone should do this!
My only regret is not attending this course years earlier...
Thank you for a fantastic course...
