The STAMPEM course consists of a number of workshops on systems for everyday analysis of patient data – blood gases, ECGs & X-rays – focusing on principles, safety tips, tricks & shortcuts. It teaches and reinforces practical methods that anyone can use on every shift, each explained down to basics. It focuses beyond what is usually covered by standard teaching.
Teaching is by currently active EM consultants, each with at least 10 years’ actual shop-floor experience.
The STAMPEM course was created as a combination of components from two previous courses, with the aim of providing a deep focus on the techniques taught, but without spending so long on any particular aspect so as to lead to a loss of interest. The first run of this new course model ran in December, 2017 and was a great success. Participant numbers were kept to a limit in order to ensure ample time for everyone's questions to be answered and for sufficient examples and practice, without rushing.
Feedback has been received from the majority of participants. It is summarised here:
Lecture quality was rated as above expectation on all sessions, especially the ones on blood gas analysis and CXR.
Candidates judged the academic level for the various sessions as pitched to their level. This is reassuring, as candidates ranged from F2 to ACP to senior registrar level. This is one of the hallmarks of the lectures - they are structured so as to be clear and useful to everyone.
Over all, candidates thought they learned substantially from every session and that their practice was likely to change because of this.
Feedback was remarkably positive in particular for the session on blood gas analysis, with a number of people expressing the view that it, even in itself, was worth coming for!

GCS: Lots of audience participation; very useful to learn more practical ways for the setting; genuinely, I can't think of anything that would make this session better...
C-spine Trauma X-rays: Fantastic session - my favourite of the day! Really useful in clinical practice and something I have had very little teaching on. Can't think of anything to improve this...
Can these methods be incorporated into the RCEM syllabus? Why do we have to go to a course to get this?

I have read about blood gas analysis on various media and it has never been that expository and easy to learn too... ECG tips were very helpful, especially identifying blocks/hemi-blocks - absolutely on point, as I have checked several examples which all fit...
As a trainee ACP, this course gave me an insight into depth of physiology that as nurses we are not taught, and how to apply when interpreting results...
